Kirk Allan Horn, 55, of Zionsville, Indiana, formerly of New Castle, died on August 3, 2018. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 30 years, Rita Stone Horn, and children Sam Horn, Jack Horn, and Caroline Horn.

Kirk was born March 22, 1963, in New Castle, Indiana to the late Robert Maurice “Bob” Horn and Jeraldine “Jeri” Hooton Horn.

Kirk graduated from New Castle Chrysler High School and Hanover College, where he earned a B.A. in Psychology.   Following college, he became a Marion County Probation Officer, a position that inspired his lifelong passion for law and public service.  Kirk received his J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law, and was admitted to the Indiana State Bar Association in 1990. Since that time Kirk built a thriving law practice, Mandel Horn, in Carmel.  He earned a strong reputation as an attorney specializing in civil rights, municipal defense, insurance defense, and litigation. On more than one occasion, Kirk was admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit.  Kirk was recognized as a 2018 Indiana Super Lawyer.

Kirk was an active runner, golfer, and tennis player, as well as an accomplished actor and playwright.  Among his hobbies were beekeeping, banjo playing, and chicken farming. He was an avid traveler, joining his sons Sam and Jack on their respective 10-day, 80-mile treks at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.  He mentored both sons through successful Eagle Scout Service Projects.

In addition to his wife and children, Kirk is survived by his mother, Jeri Horn, his sisters Vicki Wertz (Chris) of Indianapolis,  Suzanne Horn Davis of Indianapolis, Karen Snyder (Matt) of Fishers, and his brother, Bucky Horn (Diann) of Noblesville, IN.

Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Friday, August 10 at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W Moore Chapel, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis 46250.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 11 at First Friends Church, New Castle, IN.  There will be open visitation with family from 10 am until service time.

Kirk tutored elementary students in the IPS school system.  He had a big heart for the kids, and wanted them to have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.  In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to enable a student to continue their education beyond high school.
Contributions can be made to the Kirk A. Horn Memorial Scholarship through the Indianapolis Public Schools Education Foundation (120 E. Walnut Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204, www.ipsef.org or by calling our office at 317.226.3706). Arrangements entrusted to Indiana Funeral Care.

It’s always sad to read about the death of a loved one in someone’s family. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to Kirk Horn’s family. May you find comfort knowing that your loved one is in God’s memory. A comforting thought is at Acts 24:15, where there is going to be a resurrection, a real hope of being reunited with our dead loved ones soon. (John 5:28,29) May Jehovah God bring you peace and comfort to your family during this difficult time. (2Corinthians 1:3,4)

    Horn Family:

My thoughts and prayers go out to you all during this most difficult time. Kirk was a high school classmate and while we would only see one another once every five years at a class reunion, he remained the funny, witty and dry sense of humor guy that we always knew back in school. May God provide comfort as you celebrate his life in the coming days. He was truly one of kind who will be missed. God Bless.

As friends of Kirk’s sister Suzanne in Granger IN, we were many times treated to visits from her family, and Kirk was always someone we were glad to see. Bright, clever, quick witted – both dry and personable at the same time – which is a great combination. We felt blessed to know him and all his family, even if only just a little.

Sending wishes of comfort to Rita and Sam, Jack and Caroline, Jeri, Suzanne, Karen, Vicky and all his extended family and friends.

    Horn Family,
I knew Kirk as an attorney who appeared before me while I was on the bench and who I worked with regularly in my role as mediator after I retired from the bench. He was a rare breed in our profession – an excellant attorney who was also a very kind and likely person. I have no doubt he was also a wonderful husband and father. I saw him as recently as late May. He did not let on that he was not well. I am so very sorry for your loss and so sad that I will not see him again.

    Dear Horn Family,
I had the great fortune of spending time with Kirk over the years and then many days together as we represented co-defendants in a particular on-going case in southern Indiana. Kirk’s wit, honesty, and friendly nature permeated the room and made quite an impression on me. I looked forward to the many depositions we had in that last case primarily due to time and interaction with Kirk. The next time I am at The Chicken Place in Ireland (Indiana), I will hoist a schooner of beer in his name, just as he, Sam, and I were able to do not so long ago.
May the Great Healer, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, touch your hearts and bring you comfort at this difficult time. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is salvation.
    Doug

To know this man was to love him. He was an early mentor in my career. He brought joy to the workplace. As we became friends, he brought joy to my life. It was a blessing to be included in his circle of friends. Every trip I made to Indianapolis for work was preceded by a call to his cell to see if he had time for lunch. His love for life was contagious. You wanted to be around his sharp wit. When we were out and about, everything was fair game for his random, insightful observations, his unique humor (which we dubbed “the craft”), and his quips delivered with a smirk and a twinkle in his eye. As I write this, I can still hear his belly laugh as I imagine walking down the hallway away from his office. Kirk, you inspired me. You made me a better person. As I read the posts from other co-workers (whom I don’t know) on your Facebook feed, I realize that you touched many more lives than just mine. They knew you as I did — a generous, kind soul with an eye for all things good about this place we call life. To see how you inspired so many leads me to realize: you were not just successful; you were significant. I will miss you. I will honor you by trying to imitate you. And I will always, always remember you. Thank you. God bless you. Peace be with you. And has hard as it is to utter . . .”Farewell.” My condolences to Rita, Sam, Caroline, and Jack.

It is so very hard to put in words what this wonderful man meant to everyone who knew him. His wonderful sense of humor made working on even the most difficult cases more pleasurable. He was so knowledgeable and truly enjoyed the work that he did. He was respected by all of his peers. May God wrap his arms around his family during this very difficult time. He was so proud of his family. May you find comfort in the wonderful memories that will forever be with us all. We were all blessed to have him in our lives. Heaven has gained such a special angel!

    To the Horn family,
I was so sad to hear of Kirk’s passing. We lived in Versailles for a year from 1963 -1964, and I still remember sitting on Mamaw’s porch and seeing Kirk in his mom’s arms when he was a little baby. I stay in touch with Jeri (I love seeing your family’s Christmas cards) but I didn’t really know details about Kirk’s life — it sounds like he was a wonderful man! My brother, Mark, and I both live in California and I regret not being able to speak to you in person. Please accept my condolences. I’m so sorry for your loss.
